Creative Lighting for photographyI have a passion for the art of photography and love to learn new shooting and post processing techniques. My goal is to learn something new every day. I typically spend one to three hours every day studying a photography related subject. I recently completed an online creative lighting course. Just like an athlete that wishes to be at the top of their game, I practice almost every day. I asked Emma to model for me in my studio to practice some of what I just learned. These are some of the photos from the session.
We began with a skater girl theme. I started with a white background. The background was lit with two lights to make sure it was bright white. The well lit background doubles as side lighting as you can see on the sides of her face. Emma was lit from the front with two lights. The light on camera right was two stops darker to provide a shadow and show depth in the photos. We then changed to a gray background and used blue gels to add some color.
We then changed the lighting to a more dramatic feel. I dropped the background lights and went with one single light to create a low light candle effect.
